Did you know giving back may help maintain functional health? A 2006 study published in the Journal of Urban Health suggests that volunteering might help older adults maintain their strength and mobility. Functional health is displayed in the strength and agility of the RDO Caters Taters team. Numerous individuals work hard to put on an event that is both an enjoyable experience for guests and one that removes the lion’s share of effort for the benefiting charity. There is also a great deal of heavy lifting that goes on behind the scenes from the sponsor companies. Year after year, these companies step up to support RDO Caters Taters in big ways to make the event a success. One of those sponsors, Hays Companies, proves that hard work is both literal and figurative when looking at its own commitment to support causes in its communities. Hays Companies Hays Companies specializes in consulting for employee benefits, property and casualty, and private clients. As part of the Brown & Brown team of companies since 2018, Hays ranks as a top-10 insurance broker in the country. Since the beginning of RDO Caters Taters, Hays Companies has been there to support the effort. It was Barry Bremer, Senior Vice President in Account Management, who proactively looked to sponsor the event, as a way to partner with R.D. Offutt Company beyond just in a business sense. Hays Companies continues its annual support and not just as a sponsor – Barry himself still attends the event just about every year. In addition to supporting a business partner, Hays Companies’ commitment to RDO Caters Taters stems directly from the organization’s core values of supporting clients and their communities, and giving back is important across the company. According to Vice President, Joe Housman, every local team is encouraged to give back in a way that is most meaningful to them. “Our culture is very entrepreneurial, and that spirit extends to the causes both employees and clients find valuable,” Joe said. “It always comes down to the people to drive important initiatives forward.” Giving Back, Gaining Health Year after year, the Hays team flexes their muscles and each location gives back in its own way. A few of those local efforts, highlighted here, show just how important their functional health comes into play when giving back. A proud annual tradition, the Minneapolis team spends a day building affordable homes with Habitat for Humanity. In Boston, teammates raced in the annual Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon to support and raise money for life-saving cancer research. Teammates from Phoenix participated in the American Diabetes Association walk to raise money for youth programs and kids camp for children in Arizona living with Type 1 diabetes. While these are just three of the examples of Hays’ efforts across the country, they show that giving back is not just good for charitable cause. Often giving back can be done in ways that truly does directly impact health. A Cohesive Effort Then there is the one thing that all efforts, across the Hays footprint, have in common. Whether it’s years of support for RDO Caters Taters or the team’s tradition of participating in projects like Habitat for Humanity, instances of community impact by Hays Companies can almost always be traced back to individuals, like Barry, with a passion and a desire to help. “Those examples came together because someone had an idea, got involved, and got others into it,” Joe said. “It’s that personal relationship, beyond business, that makes an impact and keeps things like this going.” Similarly, the idea for RDO Caters Taters for Charity was sparked by an idea from one person, RDO founder, Ron Offutt. The event continues, thanks to the hard work of countless individuals who get involved because of the shared enjoyment of giving back – and eating potatoes. Can’t forget about those potatoes.
